Rinse the split peas under cold water and set aside.
In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
Add chopped onion, carrots, and celery. Sauté until softened.
Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Add rinsed peas, vegetable broth, and bay leaf.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to simmer.
Cover and cook for 30-40 minutes, or until peas are tender.
Remove the bay leaf and blend the soup until smooth.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs.
