Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, combine yeast and warm milk; let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Add eggs to the yeast mixture and whisk until combined.
  • Gradually add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until combined.
  • Incorporate softened butter, mixing until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Knead the dough for about 10 minutes on a floured surface.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts, rolling each into a log.
  • Braid the logs together and place in a greased loaf pan.
  • Cover and let it rise for another hour before brushing with egg wash.
